The Essential Horse Box Packing & Servicing List
The following points are a basic guide to what you could carry in your lorry as well as general precautions and servicing details.
BREAKDOWN & GENERAL ITEMS
Charged mobile phone
Break down service number
Know your arrangements for getting your horses off the road to a safe yard
Hi vis vests for each passenger
Warning triangle or 2 small traffic cones
1.5 Ltr sealed bottle of water (can be used to drink, flush wounds, cool burns or even top up windscreen washers!)
FIRE – ITEMS ARE COMPULSORY AT ALL HORSE SHOWS IN THE UK
These items should NOT be in draws, lockers or covered by other items.
A small dry powder extinguisher fixed clearly in the cab, ideally where it can be reached from the driver’s door. This can be used on A (wood, paper etc), B (liquids), C (Gaseous) and live electrical fires
A Fire blanket mounted on the wall in the living
A serviceable battery operated smoke detector on the living ceiling
A basic first aid kit to include eye wash and large padded bandage
A horse first aid kit
SERVICING & MAINTENANCE
Annual gas inspection (especially after purchase)
Turn gas bottle OFF when travelling
Annual electrical safety inspection (especially after purchase)
NB: when we encounter a lorry fire, after raising the alarm and evacuating persons our next priority is to remove gas bottles. It would be of great help to have your gas locker marked clearly on the outside.
