By definition the BSPS is not a training organisation but has a direct interest in the development and wellbeing of it's riders and members for the benefit of all from the rider's first tentative steps in the show ring to those progressing from intermediate classes into the adult showing world. Additional to this is the growing number of BSPS riders that have , and are , successfully competing in other equestrian disciplines following their basic 'education' within the Society whether it is in the flat classes, workers or heritage sections. It is always gratifying to see all the hard work put in by families, riders , producers and others resulting in riders competing at the top level nationally and internationally in showing, show jumping , eventing and dressage.
Within the overall framework of the Society the Area committees form a vital part of the development of riders and families through regular training and practice sessions organised at local level often incorporating the services of recognised accredited trainers and professional producers known throughout the showing and equestrian world.
Training is often organised in group sessions particularly leading up to the main showing season with the age and ability of the riders closely monitored to fit into small groups each mutually supporting each other together with a recognition of the ponies forward and whether they are themselves novice or of open grade. For new or novice combinations this can form a vital prelude to the new season and introduce both to indoor arenas, group activities and the actual skills needed to get the best out of both pony and rider when in the actual competitive situation. Practice sessions put on by some Areas are particularly popular as again this can be a very useful introduction to the showing environment without any pressure on rider or pony with the ability to correct mistakes, way of going and getting used to 'others' in a more relaxed and friendly environment and actually 'see' what is needed before that 'first time' in the showing ring.
It is important to liase with your Area committee to obtain details of all the training , practice and other events due to be staged by them and most importantly support them to both yours and others mutual advantage. Most events are open to all BSPS members but due to some being very popular can be run on the Area members having first priority over available places.
