Our 2007 season began very late, but with relief we still managed to pick up our RIHS ticket at the last qualifier. Every season I used to watch in awe of other riders winning and wearing that infamous RIHS blue sash and this year I was one of the lucky few to have the experience as we were called forward as winners of the Intermediate class and then went on to being awarded Supreme Intermediate.
After such a wonderful result, I vowed that if Basil and I never won another thing I would still be the happiest girl in the world.
Basil is a challenge at the best of times and he certainly kept me on my toes at the start of the week at the Championships. However, the last day brought us a win in the Premier League Red Division. From that point on, the whole day seemed like a blur, the process of getting into the Supreme seemed so complicated but with every hurdle we took, the more astonished I became. I feel privileged that all the judges who took us through the process considered us worthy of winning.
For Basil and I to be the first Intermediate pairing to take the Summer Supreme title is such an honour. To be awarded Supreme at any stage in the game is unbelievable, but as any Intermediate jockey would know, that in these latter years the competition is that much stronger and the older you get the less chance you have to fulfil your childhood dream.
This year is the first year I have gone through to an evening performance in the fantastic Vauxhall arena. The ambience and the atmosphere was incredible and to be part of the final line up was a privilege.
Finally, I’d like to say my thanks: Dad and Mum, you both give up so much to support me pursuing my hobby, I know I’ll never be able to repay you but I hope Basil and I have made you proud. Iona, your support and advice had been invaluable to me and will never be forgotten. I hope one day I can return the favour and that you too will get a taste of the same success.
Thank you to Gill Thompson who has worked so incredibly hard with Basil, she has worked miracles and the change in him physically and mentally from year to year is down to her determination and hard work.
Gill’s staff, are second to none, Mandy, Sharon, Jo, Mel and Jodie and all the show helpers. Thank you for all the help, support and friendship.
To all our yard friends, along with many friends I have made within the BSPS over the years, that magical night was made so much more special by so many of you being there, celebrating with us into the early hours!
My biggest thanks of course, to Basil. It is truly an honour to ride him. I have so many treasured memories. Basil doesn’t owe me anything and now in my eyes has nothing left to prove in the show ring. He is such a kind and special horse and if I have my own way he will always be mine.
