COUNCIL MEMBERS

NATIONAL CHAIRMAN
Mrs Pat Pattinson J.P.

PatPattinsonWebAs a farmers daughter my early years were spent riding anything to hand from Shetlands to Shires, many of which were not initially well schooled so I suspect I caused chaos and mayhem out hacking and hunting etc.

My introduction to showing came through my daughters desire to ride. This set me on a course of action many of you will find familiar:- ponies, trailers, stables, land, horsebox and more ponies (and a horse for me to prove I can still do it!)  After many hours of fun and much success at local riding clubs and  pony club we joined the BSPS, where  for many years Helen competed in WHP & SHP classes, totally home produced enjoying the highs (and lows) and made lasting friendships.

I always ride for fun but channelled my energies into supporting Helen and my ambitions to a career in teaching, eventually becoming a Primary Headteacher, a post I thoroughly relished, becoming involved with staff parents and children, enabling them to fulfil their potential. My other involvement with adults and young people serving as a magistrate often includes making life changing decisions. This has allowed me to develop my own personal skills of listening, applying diplomacy and discretion, the ability to make sound judgements and not to be afraid to do so. All of these I believe, stand me in good stead in my role as a BSPS Judge, an Executive Council member and team player on most other Committees.

I should like to thank everyone involved in the process for their advice, encouragement and friendship along the way.

I am ever optimistic for the future of our Society as it continues to evolve and serve its membership. I will be happy to play some part in that.

Enjoy your sport

NATIONAL VICE CHAIRMAN
Mr Paul Cook

BSPS Council Member
Vice Chairman of the Judges Assessment Committee

I have been very fortunate to have been brought up with horses and ponies.  This is not only my passion, but also one that I am able to share with my daughters and wider family.

It is interesting how times have changed over my lifetime.  When I was a child you tended to do everything, show jumping, eventing, hunting and showing.  Generally, you participated in showing classes when you had something good enough to show, rather than it being the whole essence of your equestrian life.

I was fortunate to have been able to compete at a high standard and could not wait until I was 14 to be able to compete in senior show jumping competitions.  It frustrates me that we now have 12 year olds on Mountain and Moorland first ridden ponies, what is the world coming too!

Although horses are my hobby, I do hold BHS qualifications and am interested in all aspects of equestrianism.  Horses have always been my hobby and we have always produced our horses from home.  There is nothing better than finding an unbroken horse or pony in the rough and breaking it and bringing it on yourself.

It has been drilled into me from an early age of the importance of correct conformation and ensuring that animals are the right type for the class they are being shown in and if they are native ponies, meet their breed specification.  Over the years this seems to have got rather lost as a new breed of competitor are more interested in performance.  Over the years showing has evolved and we now have classes for show hunter ponies, intermediates, coloureds, riding horses, retrained race horses, maxi cobs and a real enthusiasm for showing the ridden Mountain and Moorland pony. My grandfather would turn over in his grave, knowing that my daughter is showing a coloured pony!

I am a life member of the BSPS and have been on BSPS Area 17’s Committee for about 25 years as well as being a member of my local Agricultural Society Committee and am very committed to ensuring that our traditional one day agricultural shows are kept going to promote all that is best within the countryside.  There is nothing better than seeing hounds parade in the main ring.  I would like the BSPS to be more actively pro hunting.

I am fortunate to be on the BSPS, NPS, PUK, Sport Horse GB and Show Horse Association, CHAPS and BSPA Judging Panels.  Given a preference, would rather be ride judging, there is nothing better than riding a quality ridden show hunter round in a big ring at our major county shows enjoying the power as you ask it to gallop, I am a lucky man indeed!  I have been fortunate to have been able to judge at all our major shows, including RIHS and HOYS on a number of occasions, but still get as much pleasure in judging winter shows and looking out for the new star of the showing world.  I always ensure that I ride out every day and there is nothing better light permitting than riding out early in the morning in beautiful countryside before work.

As a family, we have been lucky to have had some good animals over the years, and won most major shows, although we now show fairly rarely as my girls are now adults and work commitments come first, but still manage to get out around about ten times a season.  We are very much Mountain and Moorland enthusiasts with a particular love of the Connemara pony and have been lucky to have had a number of Ann Rolinson’s “Millfield” ponies.  Whilst my sister and parents breed Section B’s, Shetlands and Exmoor’s!

As one of your Council Members, I hope to be able to bring a wide knowledge of the equestrian world to the table as well as some business acumen.  My main interests are ensuring we develop and train our judges to the highest standards, bearing in mind that we need far more judges than ever before and have less and less people who have been brought up seeing and riding large quantities of horses every day that I was privileged to do in my youth.  I am very keen that we ensure that importance of conformation and breed type are not lost over time and we safeguard out wonderful native ponies for future generations to come.

COUNCIL MEMBER
Mr Mike Hall

MikeHallWebOriginating from a non-horsy background I can’t claim a lifelong association with them, as many can, but having a pony mad daughter soon brought changes to my life and for over 25 years the family has been members of the BSPS, and we continue to have ponies and horses at home.

I have been a past Area 10 Chairman and a Show Committee member on both the Summer and Winter Championships, before taking over the position as Show Director for the Summer Championships in 1994, relishing a role which has proved both challenging and worthwhile over the years.

I was privileged to be elected onto Council in 2009, when semi-retirement from the engineering business enabled me to commit more time to the Society, and I now serve on the Heritage Show and Dope testing Committees as well as continuing as your Summer Show Director.

COUNCIL MEMBER
Mr Philip Hilton

COUNCIL MEMBER
Mr Patrick Lobb

PatrickLobbWebI was born in Cornwall to a farming family and as a boy showed ponies.  For 25 seasons I helped my father who was Master of Hounds and was very involved with the hunting.  I met my wife Shirley through the local Young Farmers Club and we have been married for nearly 39 years.  We have 3 married daughters who have come up through the ranks of the BSPS.  We have 6 grandchildren 4 of whom ride and are competing in the BSPS including 2 who now regularly hunt.

I am a past Area Chairman at present an Area Committee member, a starred judge and steward at both Winter and Summer Championships.  I have been on Council for several years now and coming from a showing family am fuly aware of the current problems facing the average showing member.

I am a family orientated man and now enjoy watching my grandchildren compete.  We travel up and down the country but showing for us is more than just the competition it is about meeting up with good friends.  For my Council work, this does however give me a good insight into the grass roots of the BSPS and what the membership really feel.

COUNCIL MEMBER
Mrs Pat Monaghan

PatMonaghanWebI have been Chairman of BSPS Area 15A for nearly 20 years.  We have had a very hardworking committee who mainly had children competing and no longer do.  We have been very fortunate to have our own Committee Room on Jan and Peter Reeds Farm.  We run a very large Summer Show with HOYS qualifiers and the Committee do all the Judges and Stewards lunches.  A good committee makes a good Area.

We are very lucky with our Area Committee who have run Teach-In for days at their own home.

At a Committee we are all getting older and at our Christmas party we asked for help and were answered by the wonderful youngsters who helped at Winter Show and are joining our Committee.

The children of Area 15A are second to none.  They are all good friends and we also have some outstanding talent among our riders.  We have won the Show pony Teams three times and I am very proud of our members.

Mrs Sue Williams

Chairman of Area 4B
Secretary to the Area Shows

SueWilliamsWebI represented the Area Chairmen on Council for three years and was then elected onto Council in 2009.

I am on the Assessment, Qualifying shows, Marketing and Communications, Winter and Heritage Championship shows sub-committees.

Some of my spare time is taken up with stewarding at many shows during the year including the B.S.P.S Championships shows. I also enjoy gardening, reading, cooking and travelling.

COUNCIL MEMBER
Mrs Joyce Coltart
Scottish Branch Chairman

JoyceColtartWebI am a farmers daughter from South Ayrshire in Scotland. Started in the showing world in my early teens and have always had ponies and horses.

Have been chairman of Scottish Branch for several years and enjoy all the challenges that position brings!

Spend many days each season judging, all over the coutry, and support the BSPS in any way possible.

COUNCIL MEMBER
Mrs Dawn Christie
Chairman of Area Chairmen

DawnChrstyWebI have been a member of the BSPS for approximately 25years and a member of Area 17 Committee for about 18 years, holding various posts. I was Area Chairman for 6 years and I have now retired as Chairman of Area Chairmen, a position I was very honoured to have held for 3 years. I have recently been voted onto Council by the generous support from our members and I will continue to work hard and help move the Society forward in these demanding and challenging times. I am a Chief steward at all the BSPS Championship shows (and steward at shows of adjoining Areas) as well as a starred Judge on various judging panels for SP and SHP, so VERY involved with the Showing world, although I do enjoy my days out at Badminton, Burghley, Cheltenham and Ascot!

My “horsey” background consisted mainly of Pony Clubbing in my early years, (secretary of the Fernie Associate committee at 18) becoming a very keen hunting enthusiast in my latter years. I was a member of both the Atherstone and Fernie Hunts (Hunting two days a week when work allowed!) I also loved my guest days out with other Leicestershire packs as well as the South Notts and Meynell. I also competed in Team Chasing and Working Hunter classes.

My professional working life was that of Design Consultant for DuPont fibres and textiles Marketing division, working mainly on the Lycra account for approximately 21 years, (although I did have my own limited company at the age of 24!) I have a degree in Swimwear and Lingerie design, so can design, cut a pattern and make a swimsuit or bra from start to finish! I was instrumental in introducing Lycra into ladies and men’s underwear in M&S and have been very lucky to have travelled the world for the organisation presenting and forecasting Fashion trends and colours to the whole of the Industry. My skills have now taken me along the path of Interior Design!

My other likes? Besides Fashion (of course!) I love to continue travelling the World to visit places that I haven’t yet seen, love my skiing holidays and swim half a mile 4 days a week! I also love chocolate!

Laughing with friends is the best tonic, as well as a G&T or glass of Bubbles! Fortunately being around children, ponies and like minded adults, the Showing World provides many opportunities to do both!
